Nearly 26 million Americans are affected by asthma, the lung disease that makes the individual’s airways tighten up and produce an excess amount of mucus. It can cause symptoms such as incessant coughing, shortness of breath, and chest pain, among many others. One of the leading reasons why asthma attacks occur is due to an allergen in the air, which the individual inhales, a reaction occurs.
There are many out there who either do not know that they suffer from asthma. This has led to a high occurrence of emergency hospital visits and admissions. This particularly affects the low-income segments of the population, or those who live in areas where medical care is not easily or readily available.
What can I do to help others who suffer from allergies?
A cure has not yet been developed for allergy or asthma, but our board-certified allergists continuously work on finding the best forms of treatment to alleviate the symptoms. At Center for Allergy and Asthma of Georgia, one of the ways we hope to help others seek treatment is to spread the word about National Asthma & Allergy Awareness Month, which is this coming May.
Here are some important dates of note:
- May 5 th is World Asthma Day
- May 10-16 th is Food Allergy Awareness Week
Springtime is the prime season for allergy and asthma. This can affect the individual’s ability to enjoy an active lifestyle, attend school, work, and enjoy recreational activities outdoors. Our center wants to encourage further scientific research and development of possible medications or other treatment methods that can make it possible.
Some of this research may include:
- Patterns of how asthma affects people living in certain regions
- Scientific research and genetic studies to target the disease immediately
- Clinical trials and tests to see how the up-and-coming treatments perform
- Programs and other resources designed to help educate the local communities
The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America developed a 31 Day Action plan, offering suggestions about what you can do to help spread awareness this month. Feel free to take a look at the list here.
Want to overcome your allergies? Call us!
Ultimately, the Center for Allergy and Asthma of Georgia wants to help others understand what triggers their asthma and allergy symptoms, and what can be done to control them. Some of the most common allergens can be found right in one’s home or immediate environment. These can be items such as dust mites, pet hair, cigarette smoke inhalation, cockroaches, and many others. Proper medical treatment is effective to tackle the symptoms; but awareness is what can help prevent the triggers from taking control.
