Eczema tends to be less of a complaint during the colder months, but once it heats up, the flare-ups begin. While unbearably itchy, red skin is known to be a byproduct of this sunny season, there are ways to make it to the end without a hitch. Here is how to handle eczema this summer.
Stay Hydrated
Flare-ups are more likely to occur on dry skin, so it is best to stay hydrated at all times. Drink plenty of water, at least eight glasses per day. Keeping your skin moisturized is also key. Moisturize twice a day using coconut oil or an eczema-friendly lotion.
Avoid Excess Sweating
While it may be impossible to keep from sweating a bit during hot summer days, it is wise to keep perspiration at a minimum. Refrain from doing outdoor gardening, exercise, and other sweat-provoking activities while the sun is at its peak. If this isn't possible, apply a powder that works well with sensitive skin before you go outside. Arrowroot or organic cornstarch will do the trick.
Swim In Saltwater
Unfortunately, chlorine-supplemented pools aren't the best option. Be sure to rinse off right away after swimming in chlorine, as it can be quite harsh and drying. However, saltwater pools and oceans are beneficial to the skin due to the anti-inflammatory and soothing properties of salt.
Choose The Right Sunscreen
Choosing the right sunscreen is a challenge of its own, but those who are prone to this condition must be a bit more cautious. To avoid itchiness and inflammation, always opt for one that is designated for those with sensitive skin. Make sure that it is also alcohol-free.
Stay Away From Perfume
Chemicals and unnatural scents can trigger a reaction, so stay away from perfumes, lotions, creams, and body washes that are made with synthetic fragrances. Instead, use essential oils or unscented products.
