Angioedema Treatments in Georgia

Atlanta Metro Area Allergy Specialists

Angioedema typically causes rapid swelling around the eyes and lips, and sometimes may spread to the hands and feet. Like hives, angioedema is usually caused by an allergic reaction.

There are two types of angiodema: acquired and hereditary. Acquired angioedema is typically the result of an allergy, and may occur simultaneously with hives and other symptoms of allergic reactions. Hereditary angioedema may affect all areas of the body including internal systems. In severe cases, angioedema can cause swelling of the throat and tongue, and should be treated with immediate emergency care.

At the Center for Allergy & Asthma of Georgia in Metro Atlanta, our board-certified allergists are highly experienced in determining which type of angioedema you may be suffering from, and providing treatment for these allergic reactions.

Signs and Symptoms of Angioedema

The symptoms of angioedema are sometimes similar to those of hives, and these conditions may occur simultaneously as allergic reactions. Symptoms of acquired angioedema include:

  • Swelling around the eyes and lips
  • Swollen areas that burn and are painful
  • Itching of swollen areas
  • Discoloration or rash on hands and feet
  • Difficulty breathing causing wheezing or stridor

While these are the most common symptoms of both types of angioedema, hereditary angioedema may also cause weakness, intense vomiting, diarrhea, and variegated rashes.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Angioedema and Skin Reactions

Our highly qualified medical doctors specialize in treating allergies, including both types of angioedema. When diagnosing angioedema, our doctors perform a thorough exam, including a review of your medical history any past allergic reactions and possible risk factors. Those at risk include patients who:

  • Have previously experienced angioedema.
  • Have had an allergic reaction affecting the entire body.
  • Sustained a recent injury or temperature change.
  • Suffer from excess stress or anxiety.
  • Have undergone recent dental procedures.

When treating angioedema, our doctors perform allergy tests to determine causation of the reaction, and will recommend that you avoid contact with the trigger(s). Depending on the severity of your angioedema reaction, the board-certified allergists at the Center for Allergy & Asthma of Georgia in Metro Atlanta may also prescribe antihistamines, corticosteroids, or an epinephrine shot.
