Insect Bite Allergic Reactions
The relatively warm, humid climate of Georgia is ideal for a variety of stinging insects including wasps, ants, and spiders.
The majority of allergic reactions caused by insect bites in Georgia are a result of these five stinging insects:
- Bees
- Hornets
- Fire ants
- Wasps
- Scorpions
Symptoms of an Allergic Reaction to Insect Bites
While many people only develop redness, swelling, or discomfort as a result of insect bites or stings, others can experience a severe allergic reaction, known as anaphylaxis.
Symptoms of anaphylaxis can include:
- Difficulty breathing
- Coughing and wheezing
- Swelling of the face and limbs
- Dizziness, confusion, or lightheadedness
- Abdominal pain with nausea and diarrhea
- Hives and/or angioedema
- Anaphylactic shock
It is important to seek immediate medical care if you experience any of these serious allergic reactions following an insect sting. The board-certified allergists at the Center for Allergy & Asthma of Georgia specialize in the treatment of anaphylaxis.
Treatment Options for Allergic Reactions to Insect Bites
Treatment following an insect sting begins with removing the stinger and venom sac. When removing the stinger and venom sac, it is important not to squeeze the surrounding area, as this can cause the existing venom to spread. Our board-certified allergists at the Center for Allergy & Asthma of Georgia in Atlanta recommend removing the stinger and venom sac using a fingernail, tweezers, or a sharp edge of plastic such as the edge of a credit card.
In case of a severe anaphylactic allergic reaction, it is imperative that you receive emergency medical care and follow-up with one of our highly qualified allergists. At the Center for Allergy & Asthma of Georgia, we specialize in treating allergic reactions resulting from insect bites. Our board-certified allergists will perform a variety of allergy tests in a safe environment to discover your insect bite triggers and may provide you with an epinephrine injection, such as an Epi-Pen®, to prevent anaphylactic shock.
