Childhood Asthma

Asthma is a chronic condition that causes inflammation of airways and restricts airflow, making it difficult to breathe. At the Center for Allergy & Asthma of Georgia, our board-certified immunologists specialize in treating chronic lung conditions such as childhood asthma, and work closely with parents to devise personal care plans for children who suffer from this condition.

Signs & Symptoms of Childhood Asthma

Symptoms of childhood asthma may surface after an upper respiratory infection, such as bronchitis, or when triggered by certain allergens. Often, asthma symptoms differ among children, so speaking with a board-certified allergist at the Center for Allergy & Asthma of Georgia in Metro Atlanta is crucial to identifying causes of the attack.

Children experiencing asthma attacks often display symptoms of traditional asthma, such as:

  • Recurrent coughing
  • Wheezing
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest tightness
  • Fatigue

Childhood asthma can cause attacks at any time, and often limits the activities which children may otherwise enjoy, such as playing outdoors. When asthma attacks occur at night, children often sleep less and may seem tired and irritable.

Childhood Asthma Diagnosis & Treatment in Metro Atlanta

At the Center for Allergy & Asthma of Georgia, our board-certified allergists work closely with parents and children to diagnose childhood asthma. Our Atlanta allergy doctors perform an initial exam in which they review the child’s medical history and past asthma symptoms. Breathing through a ‘peak flow meter’ aids in determining the strength of the child’s lungs. Since childhood asthma is often difficult to diagnose, our highly-experienced doctors may also recommend allergy tests, chest X-rays, eosinophil counts, or lung function tests.

Childhood asthma is typically treated with the use of prescription medications. Our board-certified physicians may prescribe long-term control medications, such as inhaled steroids, leukotriene inhibitors, or long-acting bronchodilators – commonly used with inhaled steroids. Rescue inhalers may also be prescribed to quickly reduce symptoms during a sudden asthma attack.

During this evaluation, our board-certified allergists will also speak to parents about eliminating asthma triggers – such as cigarette smoke, dust, and pets – from the home to reduce the likelihood of sudden asthma attacks.
