Suffering from Sinus Infections?

Our Atlanta Sinus Doctors Can Help!

A sinus infection, often referred to as sinusitis, is an infection which causes inflammation of the sinus and nasal passages. When these passages become irritated and inflamed due to an illness or allergies, mucus becomes trapped by the sinuses, which are small air pockets located behind the forehead, nose, cheekbones, and eyes.

Excess mucus in the sinus and nasal passages encourages the growth of bacteria and other germs. While the majority of sinus infections are viral infections that often clear up without treatment, bacterial infections require a prescription for antibiotics. The board-certified allergists at the Center for Allergy and Asthma of Georgia offer treatment for both bacterial and viral sinus infections.

Types of Sinus Infections

There are three identifiable types of sinus infections that we treat at the Center for Allergy and Asthma of Georgia of Georgia, including:

  • Acute Sinusitis, which is often caused by a viral infection
  • Sub-Acute Sinusitis, which is caused by a bacterial infection
  • Chronic Sinusitis, which is typically caused by persistent allergies or nasal issues

It’s important to understand the differences between the types of sinus infections, and to understand the treatment options available. Antibiotics, while often requested for viral infections, are only effective when treating bacterial infections. Our board-certified specialists perform tests to determine which type of sinus infection you suffer from, and prescribe the recommended treatment.

Symptoms of Sinus Infection

Symptoms of a sinus infection are often very similar to those of the common cold, and include:

Sinus Infection Treatment in Atlanta

Depending on the type of sinus infection that you suffer from, treatment plans may vary. At the Center for Allergy and Asthma of Georgia, our board-certified specialists perform specialized tests, such as a CT scan, an MRI, or an allergy test, which determine the development of either a viral or bacterial sinus infection.

A diagnosis of a bacterial sinus infection will typically require a prescription for antibiotic medication, while a diagnosis of a viral sinus infection may result in a recommendation for over-the-counter medication to treat the symptoms while the virus runs its course. In extreme cases of chronic sinus infections, our specialists may recommend surgery.
