Skin Treatments in the Atlanta Area
Most skin allergy conditions, such as eczema, hives, and contact dermatitis, are characterized by redness, itching, and swelling. In some cases, skin allergies can be hereditary; however, others, such as eczema, may be the result of an unidentified food allergy.
Treatment of Skin Allergies
Depending on the severity and type of skin allergy, treatment plans at the Center for Allergy and Asthma of Georgia may vary.
Eczema and Contact Dermatitis Treatment
Treatment for contact dermatitis or eczema often consists of the application of moisturizers and topical ointments used to minimize itching and inflammation. If an eczema flare-up is triggered by a skin bacterial infection, the board certified allergists of the Center for Allergy and Asthma of Georgia may prescribe a course of antibiotics.
Other treatments include:
- Antihistamines. Over-the-counter antihistamines such as Benadryl may help to relieve the symptoms associated with eczema. Most often, these are recommended for patients who suffer from nighttime itching.
- Immunosuppressants. If more conservative treatment options have failed to provide relief from eczema, your allergy specialist may prescribe immunosuppressant drugs such as methotrexate or azathioprine.
- Corticosteroids. If topical hydrocortisone cream does not relieve the symptoms of eczema, your doctor may prescribe oral corticosteroids, which help to reduce inflammation and itching.
- Allergy Shots. Allergy shots can help treat eczema or contact dermatitis that is caused by environmental allergens.
- Moisturizing Creams and Lotions. Hydrating creams and lotions can provide relief from itching.
Those who suffer from eczema may find that stress causes eczema flare-ups. The allergy specialists of the Center for Allergy and Asthma of Georgia highly recommend that these patients take steps to reduce stress in their lives, such as getting regular exercise and taking time to relax.
Hives Treatment
Before beginning any treatment for hives, one of the board-certified allergists at the Center for Allergy and Asthma of Georgia will review your medical history and perform a thorough exam to determine the cause of your allergic skin condition. Once the trigger is identified, avoidance is the best way to prevent further outbreaks.
Patients who suffer from chronic hives may find relief with oral antihistamines or prescription corticosteroids.
